Last Autumn Quarter, the UW Libraries changed the proxy service it offers to provide off-campus access to restricted resources for current UW students, faculty, and staff. Authorized individuals can click on the Off-Campus Access link on any HealthLinks page and login with their UWNetID to access restricted resources, but certain situations make this inconvenient, so what can you do? Try one of the 3 new tools that are available.
IF YOU ARE: off-campus, not using the proxy service, clicked on a link to a
restricted access journal article from an email or search results, and the
website tells you that you don't have access
YOU CAN: use the "Proxy a URL" tool located on the Connecting to UW Restricted Resources page. Copy and paste the link you clicked into the query box, click go, login with your UWNetID, and you will gain access to the restricted resource.
IF YOU ARE: off-campus, using the proxy service to access restricted
resources while writing a paper, and want to include the correct URL for a
citation, but it contains the "offcampus.lib.washington.edu".
YOU CAN: use the "Un-Proxy a URL" tool located on the Connecting to UW Restricted Resources page
to translate your URL to its regular form.
The UW Libraries has also created a "Proxy Bookmarklet" you can add to your
Favorites, Bookmarks, or Toolbar which enables you to start using the proxy service to access restricted resources without having to go back to HealthLinks or the Libraries website. When you are denied access to a UW-licensed resource when off-campus, you can just click the bookmark, login with your UWNetID, and you will gain access to the restricted resource.
