Summer Hours in Effect

Just a friendly reminder that HSL's summer hours are now in effect. In general, this means earlier closing times. To see the hours for the library branch you most often visit, please go to our Library Hours page. Even during the summer, HSL offers 24/7 access to its online resources. Visit the HealthLinks page to see what the library can do for you!

Help Us Test the New Proxy Service for Connecting to UW Online Restricted Resources

Over the summer, HSL is testing a new proxy service for connecting to UW online restricted resources.

The advantages of the new service include: a simple UW Net ID Login, no browser configuration required, and no barcode link and PIN required. To try out the new service, simply login with your UWNetID.

For more information, the Libraries has created an FAQ.

Databases for Information about Special Populations

Because special populations have different health needs, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has created several Web sites to provide information portals to issues affecting the health and well-being of these populations. The current sites are:

American Indian Health
Arctic Health
Asian American Health
NIHSeniorHealth.gov

In addition to providing information about aging, the NIHSeniorHealth.gov site is "senior friendly," offering the ability to enlarge the text, turn on high contrast, and have the text read aloud.

These sites are linked in HealthLinks from the Databases page.

Natural Standard Online now available

Thanks to funding from the UW CAM Education Grant, HSL is able to offer the
Natural Standard Online database for a year. This database provides evidence-based information about complementary and alternative therapies. It is searchable by name for herbs, supplements, conditions and alternative modalities and browsable by the same topics. Patient-oriented monographs as well as professional-oriented monographs are available. Evidence is presented in a graded format to designate the quality of the information.

Because Natural Standard Online is available to us as a site-license and restricted to UW IP addresses, you may ignore the login/logout buttons on
the left side of the search screen. At the start of a session, you may be
asked to accept the click-through license. Do click on accept if you wish to
view the monograph. Special Reports prepared by Natural Standard are not
part of the UW subscription.

Evidence is gathered by searching 9 databases, additional journals not
indexed in these databases and reviewing bibliographies from secondary
references. For more information about the preparation of the monographs,
grading of evidence, and the database, click on the Methodology or About Us
buttons on the left side of the search screen.

Please provide feedback about your use of this database by sending
responses to hsl@u.washington.edu In this way we can take your comments
into consideration when we look at our budget after the first subscription
year.
