As a result of extraordinary price increases to provide UpToDate access for our distributed community of UW Health Sciences students, faculty and staff across the Pacific Northwest Region, I have had to make the painful decision to cancel this heavily used resource. In spite of extensive negotiations with the publisher over the past two years we simply were unable to negotiate a price that our Health Sciences Libraries budget could afford. The price for UW is much higher than for other institutions, in large part, because we are a regional health sciences center with regular faculty and students across Washington as well as in other states throughout the WWAMI region. The new price would be almost 60% of the Health Sciences Libraries resources budget.
While UpToDate has been used by many as an important clinical resource, the Health Sciences Libraries currently licenses and provides additional clinical resources that we encourage you to use. We have gathered these resources into one valuable site called the Care Provider Toolkit located on the HealthLinks site. Please have a look at this site and if you have suggestions of additional resources that we currently do not provide, please let us know.
Please use this comment form if you'd like to suggest a resource to be added or submit a comment.
Efforts are underway to find a funding strategy and an UpToDate model that is affordable and acceptable to the UW.

Thursday, April 6th, HSL is participating in the annual statewide "Drop, Cover & Hold Earthquake Drill" from 9:45 am - 10 am.
At 9:45 am the building public address system will announce "an earthquake has occured" as a drill and ask people to stop, drop, cover and hold. You are encouraged to practice this earthquake response.
After the building wide announcement, the Information Desk staff will announce on our PA system " This is only a drill. You are invited to practice your earthquake response STOP, DROP, COVER AND HOLD. You DO NOT need to evacuate the library or building."
The next announcement will let you know "the shaking has stopped." At this time you may resume normal activities but you may want to discuss with your nearby co-workers what you would do if a building evacuation was necessary (Where would you go? What would you take?)
The Information Desk will announce, "This is only a drill. You DO NOT need to evacuate the library or building. Please take a moment to think about what you would have done if this had been a real earthquake"
At 10 am building PA system will announce the conclusion of the drill.
The ERes software will be upgraded on Friday March 24th. There will be short, intermittent downtimes throughout the day. We apologize for any inconvenience.

HSL is taking advantage of a recently added feature of PubMed to create a new PubMed url for you. This url will let you see a list of articles with UW Online links at a glance.
Check it out today!
By using this URL, results will be displayed under two tabs:
Under the 'All' tab, will be all the results of your search, whether or not the UW has linked to full-text. The UW Online tab displays those results that have links to full-text provided by the UW. This means that each of these citations will have a purple "UW Article Online" button when you display the results in abstract format. Clicking on that button provides you with access to the full text of the article. (If you are working remotely, you still need to click on the off-campus link or use the proxy bookmarklet to be recognized as UW at the article site.)
Please note that the UW Online links in PubMed are not the end of the line! When you do not see a UW Online link in PubMed, this does not necessarily mean that we do not have online acess. It just means that for whatever reason we could not make the link in PubMed. Always double check in HealthLinks for other possible sources of online access. Visit the eJournals page or search HealthLinks for the title (you can use the PubMed abbreviation). If you don't find it online, visit the UW Library Catalog to check for print access in the UW system. If the UW does not own online or print, you can order copies of articles through Document Services for a fee.
For ease of use, bookmark the new url. Ask your library liaison for assistance in developing your own customized filters on MyNCBI
