Patient Drug Information Available from PubMed

Links to Patient Drug Information are now available in the AbstractPlus display in PubMed. The links, when available, are listed below Related Articles on the right side of the screen. The information comes from MedMaster (TM), a publication of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, written specifically for patient education (and also available on MedlinePlus).

The links are generated using the drug name searches that are expanded based on regular PubMed mapping, e.g., albuterol will map to "albuterol"[MeSH Terms] OR albuterol[Text Word] and the citations retrieved will include a drug link to MedMaster for information about albuterol.

For more information see NLM's Technical Bulletin.

End of Year Processing for PubMed

Between Nov 14, 2007 and early December 2007, MEDLINE citations added to PubMed will be "in-process" only, i.e. bibliographic information will be provided without Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms. Searches using MeSH terms will not retrieve newer literature until end-of-the-year processing is completed.
This occurs annually while PubMed switches over to the next year's vocabulary. You can begin using 2008 MeSH terms in December.

PubMed Library Buttons Changing

The PubMed "UW In the Library" button is being replaced by a new "Check for UW Holdings" button just like the one you currently see in other dataases, such as CINAHL. The new button will allow you to check for print holdings or alternate online holdings and will link to the HSL Document Services Article Request page. In this way, the details from PubMed can be automatically pasted into the request form.

The old button will disappear for a week or so before the new button arrives. During that time, if there is no UW Article Online button (which will remain) you will need to open another browser window and check the UW Libraries Catalog for holdings before requesting the article.

Recently an attempt was made through the UW campus system to systematically download the entire contents of an extremely expensive, and critical clinical information resource. This action is illegal and almost resulted in the loss of access to this resource for the entire UW community. Fortunately, it was detected and steps taken to prevent it.

It is critical that all users in the UW community understand that any attempt to systematically download any University of Washington contracted resources violates our contracts and can result in termination of the resource. PLEASE USE OUR RESOURCES RESPONSIBLY.

New in PubMed - See UW Online Articles at a Glance

HSL is taking advantage of a recently added feature of PubMed to create a new PubMed url for you. This url will let you see a list of articles with UW Online links at a glance.

Check it out today!

By using this URL, results will be displayed under two tabs:

  1. All
  2. UW Online

Under the 'All' tab, will be all the results of your search, whether or not the UW has linked to full-text. The UW Online tab displays those results that have links to full-text provided by the UW. This means that each of these citations will have a purple "UW Article Online" button when you display the results in abstract format. Clicking on that button provides you with access to the full text of the article. (If you are working remotely, you still need to click on the off-campus link or use the proxy bookmarklet to be recognized as UW at the article site.)

Please note that the UW Online links in PubMed are not the end of the line! When you do not see a UW Online link in PubMed, this does not necessarily mean that we do not have online acess. It just means that for whatever reason we could not make the link in PubMed. Always double check in HealthLinks for other possible sources of online access. Visit the eJournals page or search HealthLinks for the title (you can use the PubMed abbreviation). If you don't find it online, visit the UW Library Catalog to check for print access in the UW system. If the UW does not own online or print, you can order copies of articles through Document Services for a fee.

For ease of use, bookmark the new url. Ask your library liaison for assistance in developing your own customized filters on MyNCBI

Search Engines Sending You on a False Lead to Article?

More and more frequently you may find links to the full-text of journal articles in your search results from commercial search engines such as Google, Google Scholar, and Yahoo. Following these links may lead to error messages telling you that you do not have access to this title. How can you work around this?

When you follow that link to the full-text of a journal article, you may not be recognized as an authorized UW subscriber. One solution is to place the UW http://Libraries Proxy Bookmarklet your favorites or bookmarks so that you can use it once you receive the error message and log in as UW, thus re-entering proxy space. Another solution is to make note of the reference and go to the Healthlinks eJournals page and search for the journal directly.

Recent PubMed Changes

At the beginning of February, PubMed's creators, NLM/NCBI, made several changes to PubMed:

  • A New Look - The Features bar (Limits, Preview/Index, History, Clipboard, and Details) is now in a file tab format. The results display will also be in the file tab format with two "default" tabs for results limited to English language or limited to Humans. Using the Tools icon (a crossed hammer and wrench) located to the right of the default filter tabs, you can select other filters to use.

  • Full Journal Name Option – to help users more easily identify the journal title in their PubMed results, a mouseover of the journal abbreviation will display the full journal name in Summary, abstract and Citation displays for most Web browsers

  • My NCBI replaces Cubby – new features include the ability to set up automatic emailing of search updates and customize filters for searching. If you previously had an account on Cubby, it was moved to My NCBI

  • PubChem: An Entrez database of small molecules links small organic molecules to bioactivity assays, PubMed abstracts and protein sequences and structures.ul>

Recently Added Resources

This is the time of year when vendors make changes to the products and, when possible, HSL makes new additions to our collections. A few of these important changes are noted in this message . Watch the HealthLinks Frontpage for updates. And, as always, contact your Libraries Liaison for a personalized update.

Newly acquired access to books include Patty's Toxicology and Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial
Materials
both of which provide useful information for occupational exposure questions. Young's Effects Online is an online version of three reference books providing data on the effects of disease, drugs and preanalytical variables on clinical laboratory tests.

Several new packages of electronic journals will increase the size of our collection. These include the Lippincott Total Access package through Ovid (of particular interest is the title Menopause), a Springer and Kluwer merger that ranges the gamut from Critial Reviews in Neurosurgery to Journal of Human Genetics and titles from Thieme.

Databases for Information about Special Populations

Because special populations have different health needs, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has created several Web sites to provide information portals to issues affecting the health and well-being of these populations. The current sites are:

American Indian Health
Arctic Health
Asian American Health
NIHSeniorHealth.gov

In addition to providing information about aging, the NIHSeniorHealth.gov site is "senior friendly," offering the ability to enlarge the text, turn on high contrast, and have the text read aloud.

These sites are linked in HealthLinks from the Databases page.

Natural Standard Online now available

Thanks to funding from the UW CAM Education Grant, HSL is able to offer the
Natural Standard Online database for a year. This database provides evidence-based information about complementary and alternative therapies. It is searchable by name for herbs, supplements, conditions and alternative modalities and browsable by the same topics. Patient-oriented monographs as well as professional-oriented monographs are available. Evidence is presented in a graded format to designate the quality of the information.

Because Natural Standard Online is available to us as a site-license and restricted to UW IP addresses, you may ignore the login/logout buttons on
the left side of the search screen. At the start of a session, you may be
asked to accept the click-through license. Do click on accept if you wish to
view the monograph. Special Reports prepared by Natural Standard are not
part of the UW subscription.

Evidence is gathered by searching 9 databases, additional journals not
indexed in these databases and reviewing bibliographies from secondary
references. For more information about the preparation of the monographs,
grading of evidence, and the database, click on the Methodology or About Us
buttons on the left side of the search screen.

Please provide feedback about your use of this database by sending
responses to hsl@u.washington.edu In this way we can take your comments
into consideration when we look at our budget after the first subscription
year.

INDEXCAT

The Index-Catalogue of the Library of the Surgeon General's Office is now searchable. IndexCat, as it is called, provides citation information for monographs and journal articles on
medical topics published between 1892-1961. For locating historical articles, this is an unparalled resource. This is a pilot release so you may experience some connection problems at first. IndexCat provides a link to send comments or questions for improvement.

On an historical note: the National Library of Medicine (NLM) began as a few books in the office of the Surgeon General in 1818. In 1840 a small notebook entitled " A Catalogue of the Books in the Library of the Surgeon General's Office, Washington City, 1840" was drawn up. This is the earliest known catalog of this Library. In 1880, the Index Catalogue described above began publication. It is the precursor to today's NLM Catalog (electronic version known as LocatorPlus).

PUBMED SEARCH HISTORY FEATURE IMPROVED

The Search History feature in PubMed (available from the top navigation bar under the search box) has always allowed you to view results and reuse previous search steps from your current session. Now History provides a menu
from which to select search statements to combine, delete, or view. For more information, read the article in the NLM Technical Bulletin.

When you use PubMed, don't forget to use the UW link to PubMed so that links to articles online (shown as purple buttons labelled UW) provided through UW subscriptions are shown in the abstract and citation views.
