Print jobs may be paid for using Jamex copy cards or cash. Black and white laser printing is $0.10 per page and color printing is $0.75 per page.
A self-checkout machine for library materials is now available and active near the Information Desk. Simply scan or swipe your Husky or borrower's card and the barcode on the item, desensitize the book and away you go!
On Monday, 12 November 2007, the Health Sciences Library will be open 9 am - 5 pm. Both the Social Work Library and KK Sherwood Library at Harborview will be closed on that day. Electronic resources will remain available.
The Library's entrance is a door (T-334) on the 3rd floor of the Health Sciences Building. The door is located at the east end of the building off the T-wing courtyard and is marked by signs.
On evenings, weekends, and holidays, this is the only unlocked entrance to the building. To move between internal corridors or enter through one of the other building entrances, you must carry photo ID and a building access card. Your health sciences department can request an access card for you; there may be a fee. All others must proceed to the T-wing courtyard entrance from NE Pacific St.
After hours, if you do not have an access card, HSL suggests you park in the C-10 parking lot behind Anderson & Bloedel Halls. Walk to the Burke-Gilman Trail and follow it east (left) to the crosswalk on NE Pacific St by the bus shelter. After crossing the street, T-334 is up the stairs and to the west (right). Do not use the overpass to the 4th floor of the Health Sciences Building because it will be locked. Alternatively, you can park in E-11 or E-12 (by Husky stadium) and walk west on NE Pacific St to reach the stairs to the courtyard. Those parking in S-1 (behind the Health Sciences building) who do not have an access card must walk around the building and then east on NE Pacific St to approach the courtyard.
Parking can be scarce and traffic heavy on football days. Consult the schedule so you know what to expect. You may wish to use public transportation.
The Health Sciences Library Cashier hours have changed. They are now 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Copy cards may be purchased:
The Information Desk has no change and does not provide cashier services. Staff there can direct you to the nearest card vending machines, copiers and printers, change machines, and cash machines.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact our cashier, Karen Murphy or call (206) 221-7481.

Need a break? Exchange one of your gently used books for one from the newly established Book Exchange shelf in the reading area on HSL's 3rd floor.
You can also request books and CDs from other libraries on campus (no charge!) using the Libraries Catalog and have the item held for pick up at HSL.
You now need to use your UW NetID to access your library account information to place holds, renew material, etc. For help with this process, visit the UW Libraries Help with UW NetID & Information page.
Both the Health Sciences Library (HSL) and Social Work Library (SWL) will close at 5 pm on Wed, Nov 22, the day before Thanksgiving. Both libraries will reopen on Saturday, Nov 25, 2006 and be open as follows:
The Global Health Resource Center, International Health Program, School of
Public Health and Community Medicine, UW Libraries, and the Department of
Communications are sponsoring a film series to support the UW Common Book theme.
In addition to public showings, copies of the films are on reserve at the Health Sciences Libary. They are listed in the UW Library catalog as a "course" called World Health Cinema and shelved by "course name" the reserve shelves. The DVDs may be checked out for 24 hours to view at home.
The Fall 2006 issue of Books and Bytes, the HSL newsletter, is now available online. Features include news about MyHealth, the new copy card, HSL computer services, and the Ask Us! campaign.
Over the summer, the Health Sciences Libraries moved to a new, "reloadable" copy card system by Jamex. If you have a Copico Northwest card, stop by the HSL Cashier's office (Monday - Friday 8 am - 4:50 pm) to transfer the balance to a new card.
New cards are purchased for $1 from a vending machine and then can have value (up to $25) added them. Individuals may still purchase cards by UW budget number, check, or credit card at the HSL Cashier's office.
Prices remain the same ($0.15/page for photocopies and $0.10/page for b&w laser printing). All but one copier uses the card exclusively.

On Monday, 18 September 2006, HSL resumes its Autumn Quarter hours.
All UW Libraries, including HSL, will be closed on Monday, Sept 4, 2006 in recognition of the Labor Day holiday. All electronic resources (with the exception of the UW Libraries Catalog - see below) will continue to be available. The Libraries will reopen on Tuesday, Sept 5, 2006.
On Wednesday, August 23, 2006, HSL will change its book loan period from 2 weeks to 4 weeks.
What does this mean to you?
Items checked out before Aug 23rd will still circulate for only 2 weeks and be subject to a maximum of 3 renewals before they must be returned. At that time, they can be checked out under the new policy.
Questions should be directed to the Information Services desk or 206.543.3390
On Monday, 31 July 2006, HSL implemented a new copy card system allowing you to purchase a card that can be reloaded (or re-valued). Cards are purchased for $1 from the vending machine and then can have value added up to $25 on the card. (Individuals may still purchase cards by UW budget number, check, or credit card at the HSL Cashier's office.)
Prices remain the same ($0.15/page for photocopies and $0.10/page for b&w laser printing). All but one copier uses the card exclusively. Copico Northwest cards will no longer work in HSL machines. The Health Sciences Library is pleased to announce the immediate release of the MyHealth Toolkit; a collection of selected health information resources for consumers. You will find the MyHealth Toolkit in the main navigation bar of HealthLinks (View image).
This new toolkit is a source of information for members of the public, in addition to the entire campus community, with regards to their own health issues.
While there is no substitute for discussing a medical concern with a health care provider, MyHealth is intended to be a starting place for locating health information and aims to make finding quality health information more accessible and to enable consumers to make more informed health care decisions.
With the release of the MyHealth Toolkit the Instructor Toolkit has been removed from the main navigation bar of HealthLinks. Don't worry -- you can still access the Instructor Toolkit by searching for instructor using the HealthLinks search box.
If you have any feedback about this change or about HealthLinks in general, don't hesitate to contact us.
Looking for an interesting diversion? The HSL has just installed their latest display on the third floor as you enter the library. Charles Darwin: His Voyage of Discovery is the theme.
Darwin's birthday is Sunday, February 12th. Every year Darwin Day is celebrated throughout the world with various displays and programs. The display at the HSL consists of books from both the Natural Sciences Library and the UW Special Collections published by Darwin. Interesting realia from the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture and a caricature of Darwin from an 1871 issue of Vanity, courtesy of Dr. John Edwards, make up the rest of the display case. A poster of the Beagle's voyage and a handout, Men of the Day, which accompanied the 1871 print, round out the display.

Your reply to this survey helps us prioritize our Student Technology Fee (STF) proposal requests. Please take this opportunity to express your opinion and to provide support for STF funding for Learning Commons updates.
Background: Equipment and software in the Learning Commons are primarily funded by the $40/quarter Student Technology Fee you pay. Campus organizations submit proposals to the STF committee to determine how your money is spent. Specific proposals have no impact on the amount of the fee.
Workstations in the Learning Commons have been replaced on a staggered 4-year rotation. This year the workstations in the drop-in area were replaced. In two years we will request that all of the classroom stations be replaced. So, at any time, students always have the option of using equipment that is less than two years old. This is an "off" year for major equipment purchases. So we're concentrating on smaller requests such as software, and a few pieces of peripheral hardware. You can see information about our past proposals.
Autumn quarter hours resume at the Health Sciences Library (HSL) on Monday, Sept 12, 2005.
For HSL:
On Monday, Sept 5, 2005, all 3 health sciences libraries will be closed in recognition of Labor Day. The Health Sciences Library (T-334) will be open on Sat & Sun, Sept 3-4, from 1 pm - 5 pm. KK Sherwood Library (Harborview) and Social Work Library will be closed. All electronic resources remain available.
The Health Sciences Library will be closed for internal maintenance all day on 8/25/2005.
This closure does not affect any other UW Libraries or eJournal access via HealthLinks. If you have a library question you can still contact us electronically.
HSL-News is now managed in a blog (?). This means changes for both HealthLinks and the news you have been receiving. Read more about the changes.
HSL-News has been a read-only mailing list to which individuals subscribed. The messages, written by an editor, announced new information resources, services and items of interest to UW faculty, staff and students. On average, you received 2 messages per month. By creating a blog, we can pull HSL-News content into HealthLinks using RSS to create the news you see on the HealthLinks front page. As a result, we will discontinue the "What's New" button on HealthLinks because the full story becomes available in the HSL News blog, with a simple click on the headline. We can also send this news out in email format as well as offer an RSS feed for the news.
You now have 2 choices for HSL-News:
For more information about news readers, and to select one, visit Google's Directory of news readers. To unsubscribe from the email list.

As part of the fully-funded Educational Partnerships and Learning Technologies Access+ Expansion Student Technology Fee proposal, the Social Work Library now has 13 new Access+ terminals.
In addition to the normal services provided by standard public library terminals — email, internet access, and access to library databases--these workstations also provide the full Microsoft Office suite, and a whole set of convenient academic research software. There is more information available about the Access+ program on the Educational Partnerships and Learning Technologies' website.
For the past year, the Libraries has been running two proxy services that individuals could use for remote access to licensed library resources such as ejournals and databases. The old service required browser configuration and used the 14-digit barcode on your Husky Card (UW ID), plus a 4-digit PIN, for authentication. The new service requires only the use of your UW NetID for authentication. Because of the success of the new service, the old proxy service will be discontinued as of July 31, 2005.
What does this mean to you?
If you have additional questions, please contact the Libraries or your liaison .
PubMed can now be set to highlight your search terms! To activate this feature, log in to My NCBI (from PubMed) and click on User Preferences from the sidebar. Choose yellow, green, plum, or aqua. Read all about it in NLM's Technical Bulletin.
Effective Saturday, Jun 11 - Sunday, Sep 11, summer (shorter) hours will be in effect. For the most up-to-date listing of hours.
The Health Sciences Library will be open:
From Jun 11 - Jun 19 and Aug 20-Sep 11, the Social Work Library will be open Mon - Fri, 1 pm - 5 pm and closed Sat and Sun. During Summer Quarter (Jun 20 - Aug 19), it will be open:
The KK Sherwood Library at Harborview is accessible 24/7 for those with an HMC ID.
HSL now has a weekly New Books list. The previous past five weeks are also available. A link to the list resides in several locations on HealthLinks - just type new books in a HealthLinks search box to quickly get to the list.
The KK Sherwood Library at Harborview is now accessible via HMC key card thus allowing 24 X 7 access. UW users who do not have key cards may gain entrance by calling the staff, if present, or security. The phone numbers are posted on the door; there is a courtesy phone on the wall near the door.
If staff is not at the KKS Library, users can get assistance in several ways. The librarian may be contacted to answer questions by emaIl or pager. Or, users can call the HSL Information Desk (206.543.3390).
The corner office (T-315) behind the Information Desk is staffed 9 - 5 Monday through Friday with librarians ready, willing and able to help you with your questions. Drop by and say hello!
The new entrance to the Health Sciences Library (HSL) will open for use later this month. (The library's internal stairs will reopen next week.)
Watch for an announcement about the opening of the new entrance. The new entrance is located at the east end of the 3rd floor T-wing, just inside the courtyard formed by the juncture of the A, C and T wings of the Health Sciences Building. (See map.) The addition of this entrance allows the remainder of the Health Sciences Building to be secured after-hours, i.e., evenings, weekends, and holidays.
How will this new entrance impact you?
For information about access to the Health Sciences Building see Health Sciences Academic Services & Facilities or direct your questions to hsbuild@u.washington.edu or 206-685-0143. For information about HSL policies and services, visit HSL's website or send comments and questions using the form at the bottom of that page.
Social Work Library hours have increased and HSL has resumed its usual hours. Staffing changes at the KK Sherwood Library affect its services.
Because of staffing changes, the KK Sherwood Library at Harborview Hall may not always be staffed during regular hours of operation (8-5 M-F). If you require personal assistance, e.g. to check out books that have been shipped from campus, you should call ahead (341-4124) to confirm the availability of staff. Plans are in the works to provide keycard access to the library 24 X 7
The New Acquisitions Area (on the 2nd floor) for serials has been temporarily closed and all issues are now shelved in the serials stacks. The "New Book Shelf" remains in place. Watch for a new "Reading Area" on the 3rd floor once it opens.
In anticipation of the move, the New Acquisitions Area (on the 2nd floor) for serials has been temporarily closed and all issues are being shelved in the serials stacks. The "New Book Shelf" remains in place. Once the move is made to the 3rd floor, a "Reading Area" will open upstairs. It will hold the latest issues of 100 journals and the new books along with comfy chairs for browsing. A list of those titles will be posted in early January. Ask your Libraries Liaison for information on creating an email alert so that you know when your favorite titles are updated.
Most of the construction is complete. Now we are left with the finishing touches and the moving of furniture, equipment, and people, much of which will take place in the first few weeks of the quarter. Watch for signs and announcements to help you find your way. Thank you for your patience in this time of transition.
Shorter hours will be in place at all HSL units Dec 18, 2004 - January 1, 2005. Standard hours resume on Sunday, Jan 2, 2005 for HSLIC. KK Sherwood Library (Harborview) and the Social Work Library will be closed on Jan 2, 2005 and begin Winter Quarter hours on Monday, Jan 3, 2005.
All electronic resources remain available throughout the break.
Additional study areas are located at the South Campus Center (SCC). Study rooms are available to students, at no charge, for groups of 4 or more. To reserve a study room, go to the Candy Counter at the SCC and request use of the space. For room availability
In recognition of Veteran's Day, on Thursday, Nov 11, 2004, the Health Sciences Library will be open 9 am - 4:45 pm . Both the Social Work Library and KK Sherwood Library at Harborview will be closed on that day.
Changes for the Thanksgiving break are as follows:
All electronic resources remain available with the exception of the UW Libraries Catalog on Nov 11th. (See related article.)
The construction of a new 3rd floor entrance to the Health Sciences Library (HSL) starts on Monday, Sept 27, 2004. We hope the new entrance will be ready for the start of Winter Quarter, January 2005.
During construction:
The scope of work includes: relocation of the 2nd floor library entrance to the third floor, relocation of associated library functions, addition of a new entrance desk, carpet, new security doors and security hardware, ADA modifications to third floor men's restroom, relocation of email stations and updated electrical compoenents to the North portion of the library.
Watch the HSL Construction page for updates and please excuse our mess while we create an improved facility for you. Questions may be addressed to hsl@u.washington.edu or 206-543-3390
Now through Oct. 1, 2004, voter registration forms are available at the HSL Information Desk. Pick one up, fill it out, and submit it to the elections office. For your convenience, you can leave the form and we will submit it to the election office for you. See UW Vote! for more information.
Autumn quarter hours are now in effect for the Health Sciences Library.
Effective 21 September 2004, the Libraries' fines policy changed. For a complete description of the policy, look at Lib Guide 38. A summary of the policies may be found on the HSL Circulation Policies page.
HSL Library Liaisons can help you (and your staff or students) save time and search smarter by providing customized classes on accessing and using the myriad of resources available from the UW Libraries. Computer labs and liaisons' time fill fast, so book now to get the best selection.
Don't know who your library liaison is? Visit the HSL Library Liaison Program page. Library Liaisons will also meet with individuals to consult on database searching, evidence-based learning, etc.
For items due on or after September 21, 2004 library fines will begin accruing immediately at $0.50 per day with a 4-day grace period. You will be billed a replacement charge and a non-refundable $20 billing fee when an item is 21 days overdue. We will send a courtesy email due date notice 2 days before your items are due.
For reserve materials, library fines will continue to accrue at an hourly rate of $2.50 the first hour, then $0.50 per hour. After 57 hours, a non-refundable $30 billing fee will be charged in addition to the fine. To avoid fines, reserve items must be returned to the library from which they were checked out. All other items may be returned at any UW library.
All UW items that circulate more than 14 days may be renewed an unlimited number of times online. Items that circulate 14 days or less can be renewed 3 times online and then must be brought back to a library. Remember, items can be renewed online.
Did you know that your library liaison can assist you in the literature review portion of a systematic review? The liaison can meet with you to discuss search strategies and appropriate databases as well as run those searches for you. Visit the Liaisons Page to contact your liaison or the Database Search Services page for more information about search services.
Examples of searches with which librarians have helped are:
Wondering how to start on a systematic review? The following recent article provides a good overview:
Effective Friday, July 23, 2004 new renewal policies for UW Libraries' materials are in effect. To summarize, if an item does not have a hold placed on it:
Remember, you can read more about Circulation Polices or renew an item online.
What is the difference between the UW Libraries Proxy server and an Open Proxy?
The UW Libraries spends significant time and money in negotiating and signing contracts for UW-only access (faculty, staff, students, walk-ins) to expensive online resources, such as eJournals. These contracts often state that the UW must make reasonable efforts to restrict access to only UW users; therefore the UW Libraries makes available an authenticated proxy service to allow only UW users remote access to these restricted resources. For information about the UW Libraries' proxy service, check out the "Getting Connected Page"
An Open Proxy server is an unauthenticated proxy server that opens a door that allows anyone access to these same expensive restricted resources, regardless of their affiliation. An open proxy server is either accidentally, unknowingly, or deliberately misconfigured to provide anyone free access to expensive UW-restricted resources.
Recently vendors discovered a couple of Open Proxies at the UW, which severely jeopardize the licensing agreements that the Libraries holds with the vendors. Fortunately, the vendors allowed us time to shut down the offending unauthenticated proxy servers. Vendors normally respond to Open Proxies by shutting off the offending UW computer's access to their resources, but in a more serious case, the vendor might shut off access to the whole UW.
More information about "Open Proxies" is available from JSTOR at:
http://www.jstor.org/about/openproxies.html
and

If you run a proxy server at the UW, you can check that your server isn't acting as an "Open Proxy", by using this tool.

Just a friendly reminder that HSL's summer hours are now in effect. In general, this means earlier closing times. To see the hours for the library branch you most often visit, please go to our Library Hours page. Even during the summer, HSL offers 24/7 access to its online resources. Visit the HealthLinks page to see what the library can do for you!
Over the summer, HSL is testing a new proxy service for connecting to UW online restricted resources.
The advantages of the new service include: a simple UW Net ID Login, no browser configuration required, and no barcode link and PIN required. To try out the new service, simply login with your UWNetID.
For more information, the Libraries has created an FAQ.
Check out the new toolkit on HealthLinks, the Writer Toolkit. This collection of dictionaries, encyclopedias, style guides and copyright information will help you select and use the correct format for your writing.
The UW Libraries contracts with a variety of vendors and publishers to
provide you with hundreds of electronic resources costing millions of dollars per year. In addition to paying for these resources, the Libraries typically negotiates license agreements that stipulate how and by whom they may be used. If license terms are violated by anyone, licensors usually haven the right to temporarily suspend access FOR THE ENTIRE UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY! In some cases, licenses can be permanently revoked.
You can help prevent problems with our electronic resource providers by
adhering to "good practice" and avoiding improper use. These guidelines are
available at: http://www.lib.washington.edu/cms/usageguidelines.html
As the summer and fall quarters approach, the information professionals in
the Health Sciences Libraries stand ready to provide quick or in-depth
orientations about library services and resources to incoming residents,
fellows, staff and students. Contact your library liaison for an orientation or class.
All full-time faculty, residents and fellows as well as research scientists
will soon receive an invitation from Betsy Wilson, Director of University
Libraries, asking them to help the UW Libraries by completing the 2004
triennial library survey. Hearing from each person who uses the library
resources is extremely important as the responses guide our decisions.
This year, for the first time, faculty will be given a choice between using
a Web version or completing a paper copy. In either case your responses are
anonymous. You are encouraged to take a few minutes to complete the survey
and ensure that your views as well as those of health sciences are
represented.
